KEEPING TIME

I recently read that a casualty of the relentless march of technology is information captured on obsolete data storage formats. A piece of Egyptian papyrus is easily read after a couple of thousand years whereas the newer digital storage tapes are vulnerable to data loss after about ten years unless recopied.

Something to think about as we ponder today's texting and tweeting mania. We share ever smaller bits of ever more evanescent information that is gone before it is even forgotten.

Luckily for us, not everything gets swept away by the onrush of modernity. We can still enjoy the voice of a great tenor like Enrico Caruso, ironically in part because he was willing to use the cutting edge technology of his day, the phonograph. His rendition of Cantique Noel (O Holy Night) remains my all time favorite classical Christmas song.
