CHAOS THEORY
Chaos theory is one of the most important scientific theories you maybe don't know much about. The so-called Butterfly Effect posits that small changes in initial conditions can lead to very large changes in the outcome.
Another way of looking at this is that simple systems following a few simple rules can create very complex results that appear to be random but are in fact determined by the inital conditions. Perhaps the most common example of this is fractals. Another example you might be familiar with is the universe.
