I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS

Two recurring images. An old couple walking hand-in-hand, leaving a home improvement exposition, carrying little shopping bags filled with brochures and advertisements for the various dreams and schemes they have in mind. They see only the promise of what lies ahead, not the sadness of what has been left behind.

Another couple, younger, the man in a wheelchair, the woman pushing him up the alley beside the grocery store. She is weighed down by a large backpack that carries whatever is it they have bought. I see her the next day, still pushing his wheelchair. I wonder how many miles she has pushed him in that chair. I wonder if I would have the heart to do the same? I think so ... I know so ... I hope so.

I want to feel what love is. I know you can show me. Yes, you can.

IN QUOTES

"Nearly all marriages, even happy ones, are mistakes: in the sense that almost certainly (in a more perfect world, or even with a little more care in this very imperfect one) both partners might be found more suitable mates. But the real soul-mate is the one you are actually married to."

J. R. R. Tolkien
