THERE ARE NO GIANTS
The name of this blog is "Every Man A Giant," with apologies to the ladies, who are by no means excluded by what is intended to be a generic epigram. The phrase is a call to greatness, a plea to answer the call of destiny, an urging to rise up and face the crisis of the day.
In these troubled times I'm afraid the appropriate rallying cry would be "Anyone A Giant?" We live in big times with big problems governed by small people with small answers.
It is hard to believe that the crap going on in the Senate right now would have been tolerated for 2 seconds by the iron-fisted Congressional leaders of times past. Can you imagine Lyndon Johnson in his days as Senate president putting up with the likes of Mitch McConnell? He would steamroller these people in a heartbeat, using every trick in the book, dirty or otherwise.
The Republicans are using the threat of a filibuster to de facto amend the Constitution to require 60 votes to get anything done, said 60 votes being required to pass a motion of cloture to end a filibuster. The headline after the election of Scott Brown said it all: "New Republican majority: 41 to 59."
Impatience with the inept leadership of Harry Reid is growing. And yes, President Obama is part of the problem too, just as JFK was in his day. Oh yes, Camelot was not always Camelot.
The president talks tough but he has to be tough or he will get no respect. His predecessor rode rough shod over the Congress and got pretty much everything he wanted, which is why we are in this mess in the first place.
How about this for a modest proposal: Let the damn fool Republicans filibuster their little hearts out. Call their bluff. Let them grind the wheels of everything to a complete halt. Let them take the party of "NO" to its logical conclusion.
I actually think we may be getting to that point. As far as I am concerned it can't come soon enough.
